“Make-up is a reflection and a celebration of one’s inner beauty.” Gino Alducente believes so. Gene, as he is affectionately known, is a Filipino freelance hair and make-up artist.
Aside from doing make up with Rita Ora when she comes to Dubai, his two favorite events were Luxury Fashion Week in Abu Dhabi which gave him the chance to work with international designers who flew in from Paris and Italy. They were Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexis Mabile, Nina Ricci, among others.
He took active role in the Amato Haute Couture Show and photo shoot for Germany’s next top model with Heidi Klum and team on set. He recalls that it was “fun and such an experience of a lifetime.”
Born in 1986, he says he is from the generation caught between post-modernism and a digital technology. “I am influenced by things concerning pop-culture like MTV’s, the movies, street fashion, glossy magazine ads and urban lifestyle.
This 27-year-old talented Pinoy loves most designer Alexander McQueen, Furne One, Mac Jacobs, Theirry Mugler, John Galliano and Karl Lagerfeld.
Gene lives in a hectic world but fun. He stressed he’s happy to be surrounded with amazing and talented people. “I’m glad I’m always drawn into best as well as good people in the industry. When it’s busy, it’s really busy. When it’s quiet, I do things I love. I’m quiet old school who loves to stay at home.”
Innovation has always come on top of his priorities. This maybe the reason why he organized the Makeup Artist DNA, a group of freelance make-up artists who are basically working in the industry. They joined forces to help the make-up enthusiasts and upcoming make-up artists on how to break into the business. “We train them thru our makeup seminars and our team serves during fashion shows and events.”
His job has always been so challenging. “I have been working with people of different attitudes everyday and the challenge is how to deal with it. But it’s fun and fulfilling for you work with the best of the best in the industry.”
“The advantage of being in my profession is that you got to hang-out with awesome people including the celebrities and famous people plus you are being paid to mingle.”
Gene does not speak about frustrations for he does not like “negativity” to affect his life. “I just work hard. That’s how I deal with bad publicity. My work speaks for itself.”
To those who wish to excel, he said, “Dream. Every day is a living dream. Don’t stop learning.”
Behind his success is the driving passion. “I started quiet young. I joined a local make-up competition and I won as a grand champion. That’s how I started professionally. I just love my job. I can’t do anything else than make-up.”
Despite what he has accumulated the past years, he’s shy to admit that he has gone far. “I don’t believe in arrivals. It’s just saying in a way that you have come to your limit. There are a lot of things to learn and every season, there’s always something’s new. It’s always been a continuous process.”
Perhaps, he emphasized that his greatest achievement has something to do with acceptance. “I faced one of my greatest fears.”
Gene is now based in Hongkong.
