UAE-based Filipino photographer makes headlines in China

Architect Mario Bejagan Cardenas, a multi-awarded international photographer based in Abu Dhabi, again made headlines in China after he captured two awards in the 9th edition of the Humanity Photo Awards (HPA).

Rhio, as he is affectionately known in the artists circle, won two awards including the Documentary Award (Festivities Category) for his portfolio entries entitled “Marmoum Swaihaan Liwa Festival”.

Humanity Photo Awards is a biennial photographic competition organized by China Folklore Photographic Association (CFPA). It is supported by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The year 2015 marks the 9th HPA Humanity Photo Awards and has received about 83,000 entries from participants of 113 countries and regions from a global community of folklore photographers.

Rhio is extremely grateful for this award. “Thank God! I am extremely delighted and honoured to attend an all-expense paid trip to the Beautiful and Magical Shangri-La County, Yunnan, China to attend one of the biggest and prestigious photography events in the world.”

YEARS 2013-2014

Rhio is not new to HPA. It can be recalled that Rhio also took an all-expense paid trip to China to receive the Grand Prize Award for Architecture Category for his portfolio entries entitled “Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque” in the Humanity Photo Awards  held at Chateau Lafitte Hotel, Beijing, China. He also received Documentary Awards  for “Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque” and in Festivities Category for his photo series entitled “Emarati Festivities”. His photo series entitled “Portraits of Mantalongon (Cebu)” got a Performance Award in People and Costume category.

THE MULTI-AWARDED FILIPINO ARTIST

Rhio has gone far. In the United Arab Emirates, he is being looked up to as one of the Top 10 Award-Winning Filipino Photographers. His inspiring story was featured in Precious Gems in a Desert of Gold, the first and only coffee table book about Filipino trailblazers in UAE.
